Yoga Holiday on Isla Mujeres

Greetings one and all to my inaugural blog post!

I have recently returned from Mexico on an extended stay over the holidays and I had a wonderful time. This time I stayed on Isla Mujeres (the island of women ), a small beautiful island on the Yucatan Peninsula just a short drive north of Cancun and a 20 minute boat ride across. The island is just 5 miles long and 400 yards wide.

Golf Cart Isla Mujeres

Local mode of transportation

There are some cars and trucks but most of the locals ride scooters/motorbikes and visitors primarily rent golf carts.

We stayed at Mara Villa Caribe, right on the beach of the eastern windward side of the island for a few weeks. Then we stayed at Marina Paraiso over the Christmas holidays.

There were a number of yoga studios on the island. Just a few doors down from Mara Villa was Casa Ixchel, a very nice boutique hotel. Again, right on the water with large rooms and a beautiful pool overlooking the ocean with a yoga platform and restaurant up above.

The hotel is featuredon this site. Melanie Hermans taught locals and guests alike. I enjoyed many delightful Hatha Flow yoga sessions with her under the palapa roof with the ever present waves adding to the moments.

I also got over to the Na Balam Beach resortwhich is at the north end of the island. It is an amazing spot and a full service hotel with all the amenities. They call it a Maya haven on the beach. The rooms are quite nice and the restaurant is right on the beach. Great swimming out front and snorkeling around the corner.

Lorrie Conglose runs the yoga program for the resort. She is from the Sivananda lineage and does a Vatsu yoga that really embodies the Sivananda approach. I have been to the Sivananda Ashram in Bahamas a number of times (more on that in another post). The hour and half class at Na Balam leaves you feeling very refreshed! They also do some special events and teacher training.

More on Isla in my next post… Enjoy the photos!
